And so it begins. There was always going to be trouble after Fernando Torres, for years Liverpool's best player and one of the top strikers ever to grace the Premier League, made clear it was his intent to leave Anfield and leave for hated Chelsea. Torres had previously said that Liverpool was the only club in England he'd ever play for, and Chelsea are offering him massively increase wages, so it's no wonder some fans are feeling just a little bit betrayed right now. It's also unsurprising that some of them are getting out of hand in expressing themselves:
Liverpool FC ‘Fans’ Burn Their Torres Shirts, Bring Shame To Their Families
Hardly original, but still a rather depressing sight - fans so irrationally angry at a move that they’re willing to burn the club’s uniforms. Is an effigy next? What would happen if Torres failed his medical at Chelsea, or the move falls through in some other way? De-burning isn’t exactly possible, you know.
I get that transfers like this are emotional. I really do. But footballers come and footballers go, and you can’t expect someone to stay at one club forever, especially one that isn’t matching their ambitions or their price tag. In thirty years time, when Torres’ stay at Anfield is a distant legend, do you think anyone involved in this is going to be proud of themselves? Can we please have some perspective here?
Shirts, obviously, are temporary. Class - and the lack thereof - is forever. Most Liverpool fans know that, but apparently some do not.
