MLS Mock Draft: New York Red Bulls Select Jalil Anibaba With 13th Pick

13. Jalil Anibaba (New York Red Bulls)

Ben Schneider (Once A Metro): New York has the starting XI to contend for MLS Cup, but lack depth in some areas. With the retirement of Mike Petke, New York needs a back-up in central defence. The starting pair of Tim Ream and Carlos Mendes performed well for much of last season, but New York's only remaining backup is Andrew Boyens. Rafael Marquez has shown his quality in defensive midfield, and the selection of Anibaba allows Marquez to keep his role ahead of the back four and gives New York a solid back up for Ream and Mendes.

Drew Epperley (WV Hooligan): Love the defense pick for New York. Anibaba is the physical back that the Red Bulls need. He's possibly the most senior ready defender in this draft. Anibaba will allow Marquez to sit above the defense which has to be something Hans Backe is looking for this winter.
