I feel like taking back everything I wrote about Necaxa and their acquisitions. I was pretty sure that they had made some astute signings and that they would fight hard to stay up. After tonight, that seems pretty unlikely. It’s just one game, but it’s very difficult to see them staying up after the performance they put in tonight.
Necaxa Vs. Jaguares: 0-1 Full Time, The Drop Is Already Looming
Necaxa’s only real chances came off of dead balls and long shots. They were poor, to put it bluntly. Despite all of the additions, they looked like the same team who couldn’t score worth a lick in the last tournament. They didn’t look like they had a whole lot of fight or creativity in the midfield, and you usually need at least one or the other to win games.
Jaguares were hardly stunning tonight, and that’s why it’s so hard to swallow the fact that Necaxa dropped all three points at home. Damian Manso’s goal was great, but outside of that, it wasn’t a great performance. To be honest, it wasn’t that great of a game, a pretty lackluster opening fixture. Outside of the goal, there wasn’t a ton of quality.
It’s hard to see Jaguares getting back into the mix in Liguilla or competing in Copa Libertadores when Jackson Martinez isn’t in the lineup. I have no idea as to the extent of his injury, but if it’s remotely serious, Jaguares are in some serious trouble. I’d say they’re back in contention for the drop, but let’s be honest, they won’t sink below Necaxa.
So...uh...let’s hope the football tomorrow is better. It really should be.
