If the FIFA world rankings are to be believed (they're not), France are the 12th best team in the world, sandwiched between Greece and Russia. That sounds about right, but then take a look at the UEFA coefficient, which has them 12th as well. The problem is that means UEFA has them ranked as the 12th best team in Europe. So 12th best in the world and 12th best in Europe? Something here is amiss.
France The 12th Best Team In The World...And 12th Best In Europe?
The FIFA rankings are calculated over a four-year period with matches in major competitions and the most recent matches more heavily weighted. The UEFA coefficient is less complicated, but it has one thing in it that accounts for the huge difference between France's FIFA and UEFA ranking. The UEFA coefficient puts 40% of its weight on the 2010 World Cup, where France was all bickery and stupidheads. The match part is less fun though. Point is, France - 12th in the world, 12th in UEFA. Huhwhat?
