Thanks to the tight nature of the Mexican Primera table, Monarcas Morelia have gone from 14th to the edge of a playoff spot in one match, while UANL Tigres will probably be off the top of the table at the end of the round. Using the relatively negative and structured strategy they’ve used all season, Morelia were able to keep Tigres at bay, holding them to a shutout in a 2-0 win.
Monarcas Morelia Vs. UANL Tigres, 2011 Mexican Primera: Miguel Sabah, Jaime Lozano Snatch Huge Win For Morelia
For the majority of the match, Morelia played for a draw. Tigres struggled to create like they normally do while Morelia looked like themselves, content with 0-0. Morelia broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, though, thanks to a cross by Rafael Marquez Lugo and a well-placed header by the team’s leading scorer Miguel Sabah. In the 88th minute, Jaime Lozano put the game to bed, scoring on an absolutely brilliant free kick.
Morelia have moved up to tenth and could reasonably finish the round as high as ninth in the table. Behind Tigres, the competition is so tight that six different teams could pass them in the table by the end of the round.
