In case you thought that the second tier of teams in La Liga had some sort of chance at challenging the big two this season, you were sorely mistaken. Three of those teams were in action on Saturday of Week 7, and all three of those teams drew while Real Madrid and Barcelona coasted to simple victories.
La Liga Saturday, Week 7: Spain’s Second Tier Of Teams All Limp To Draws
Getafe 0-0 Villarreal
Oh Yellow Submarine, how you disappoint. Villarreal have a Champions League game this week, but they weren’t resting their best players. Well...their best players might have decided to rest themselves while on the field. This one was pretty dire.
Adil Rami scored early with a header on a corner kick to give Valencia the lead, but he eventually hurt his team with his antics. Mehmet Topal gave away a penalty with a handball in stoppage time, which was converted for the equalizer, and Rami got himself a red card and suspension for harassing the referee.
Granada 0-0 Atletico Madrid
Unlike the Getafe-Villarreal match, this one wasn’t about a lack of effort and ideas going forward. Atletico created plenty, but thanks to a little luck and an absolutely stunning performance by goalkeeper Roberto, Granada were able to scrape a point. Atleti had plenty of shots and will feel a bit hard done by that they weren’t able to get all three points.
