Whether it was the international break or just a continuation of average form, Monterrey came out completely flat at home against Club America on Saturday night, falling 3-0 to the Super Eagles. The score could have very easily been more lopsided, as the Rayados failed to create and were completely anemic going forward. Their defense was obviously not at their best either, and America created a high volume of quality chances.
Monterrey Vs. Club America, 2011 Apertura: Full Time, Rayados Abysmal In Defeat
The start of the game was poor from both teams, but America eventually came into the game as the half wore on, while Monterrey did nothing of the sort. It felt like the Rayados could get it turned around if they could just get to the locker room tied 0-0, but Jose Joaquin Martinez completely changed the plans of Victor Manuel Vucetich when he scored for America in the 40th minute.
Monterrey didn’t look quite as inept going forward in the second half as they did in the first, but they still weren’t able to create anything of real substance, as Walter Ayovi and Humberto Suazo looked tired and rusty after long trips with their national teams.
Oscar Rojas added a second goal in the 68th minute on a deflected shot, while Aquivaldo Mosquera completely ended Monterrey’s hopes at a point with a great headed goal on a Daniel Montenegro corner kick in the 76th minute.
