Each of Atletico Madrid's last two home matches finished 4-0 in favor of the crowd favorites so when they hosted Sevilla at Vincente Calderon Stadium, they hoped that they would show the same form in dispatching of their opponents. In mant ways, they showed that form. They controlled the match, dominated the midfield and created the bulk of the chances, but poor play in the final third ruined a good performance in the rest of the field as Atletico were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw with Sevilla.
Atletico Madrid Vs. Sevilla, 2011 La Liga: Wasteful Atletico Settle For Draw
Amazingly, it was the red hot and highly rated Radamel Falcao that was the most wasteful for Atletico. He missed several good opportunities, more with poor finishing than being denied by great goalkeeping as the Colombian struggled all match. He was at his worst when he got the ball a mere five yards out with the entire goal to shoot at, yet he somehow managed to put the ball over the bar.
As poor as Atletico may have been in front, Javi Varas did do his part in frustrating the hosts. He robbed Falcao with a brilliant save in the second half, but he also denied Jose Antonio Reyes twice and got off his line to gather a pass from Diego just before Falcao could get to it.
Sevilla struggled to generate much of anything, only once getting a clear opportunity. Manu del Moral took the ball and got in behind the Atletico defense, but Thibaut Courtois made a tremendous save to keep Sevilla from going in front. Besides that, it was a lot of nothing for Sevilla, who will be happy to get out of Madrid with a point they would have never had with some better finishing from a Atletico side that must be disappointed to have not scored and won.
