Universidad Catolica made things interesting, scoring an early goal to cut into Velez Sarsfield’s 2-0 first leg lead in their Copa Sudamericana tie, but the Argentinian champions prevailed in the end, adding a second half goal to draw 1-1 on the evening to gain a 3-1 aggregate win. Both sides are technically and tactically sound and both started with five in midfield, so clear-cut scoring chances were tough to find. Each side found one goal, and that was good enough for Velez.

Gonzalo Sepulveda was the man who scored for UC, and the goal was an absolute stunner. From the edge of the penalty area, picking up a pass by Milovan Mirosevic, Sepulveda took a fantastic shot and powered the ball past Marcelo Barovero.
The game was a bit cagey from then on out, but Velez dashed all hopes UC had of a comeback in the 76th minute. On a free kick from well outside the area by Hector Canteros, Fernando Ortiz got his head to the ball and directed it into the back of the net, equalizing on the night and sealing the aggregate win.
Velez will face the winner of the Sante Fe-Botafogo tie. The teams drew the first leg 1-1 and the second leg takes place on October 25.
