The New York Red Bulls are off to a fantastic start in a match where points are a must, scoring early against the Philadelphia Union. The Chicago Fire and Portland Timbers are feeling their playoff hopes slip away, as RBNY are already 1-0 up and only in need of a draw to qualify.
Red Bulls Vs. Union Live, 2011 MLS: Dane Richards Forces Mondragon Own Goal
The goal is down as a Faryd Mondragon own goal, but that's harsh on the former Colombian No. 1. RBNY's 8th minute goal was created by Dane Richards, who headed a Jan Gunnar Solli cross off of the post. The ball hit a diving Mondragon in the back after ricocheting off of the woodwork, then trickled into the back of the net to give the Red Bulls the lead.
While Philly are already in the playoffs, there’s no doubt that they’ll be fighting hard to turn this result around. A draw will put them in a vulnerable position where they can drop out of the top three spots in the Eastern Conference and down into a wild card spot, meaning they would have to play an extra game to get to the MLS Cup Final.
