It’s taken since Week 4, but Hamburg have finally pulled themselves off of the bottom of the table.
Hamburger SV Vs. VfL Wolfsburg, 2011 Bundesliga: Hamburg Finally Off Bottom Of The Table With Draw
New manager Thorsten Fink's debut didn't start as well as he'd hoped. Mario Mandzukic headed home a cross from Patrick Ochs after only a minute gone to give Wolfsburg the quick lead. Dennis Aogo came out of position to make a poor clearance and saw the ball played to Ochs who was running into the space Aogo just vacated. The cross was pinpoint to the head of Mandzukic in the six yard box, but there were no central defenders to be found. Quite simply the easiest goal scored on the day.
Hamburg continued to attack and were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 56th minute. Mladen Petric broke through the Wolfsburg backline on a beautiful pass by Gojko Kacar and deftly put it over a sliding Diego Benaglio.
While a point is better than no points, Hamburg will have to see today as an opportunity wasted to get completely out of the relegation zone. Fink will be looking at this squad knowing that it’s too good to go down, and they just need a little more tweaking to begin their ascent up the table.
