Monterrey came into this game almost needing a win, and definitely needing at least a point. UANL Tigres are far from locked into a Liguilla spot and had a chance to both sink their rivals and climb up the table. This match got a lot of hype, and it lived up to none of it. Both Tigres and Monterrey lacked invention as most of the game was played in the center of the pitch and the best chances came on set pieces and long shots. Both teams go home with a point after a 0-0 draw, and based on the play on the pitch, it’s hard to believe either team is dissatisfied.
UANL Tigres Vs. Monterrey Live, 2011 Clasico Regiomontano: Full Time, A Dull 0-0
All of Humberto Suazo, Dario Carreño, Cesar Delgado and Sergio Santana started for Monterrey while Walter Ayovi remained on the bench. It appeared to be an extremely attacking lineup from Victor Manuel Vucetich, but they didn’t do a whole lot of attacking. The Rayados managed just two shots and had little possession, as Tigres controlled the game.
Problem was, Tigres didn’t want to do much with that control. The box score makes it look like they had a high volume of quality chances and that Jonathan Orozco was the man of the match, but he didn’t have to do anything spectacular. Tigres were playing a very conservative game and didn’t have the creativity to break down Monterrey and create clear-cut chances.
And so, the Clasico Regiomontano ends in a draw. A boring draw. Hopefully the Super Clasico produces a little more entertainment.
