DFB Pokal 2011, Second Round: Borussia Dortmund Dominate, Hamburg And Gladbach Sneak By

Tuesday’s set of 2011 DFB-Pokal second round fixtures didn’t provide any surprises, though a couple of Bundesliga sides received serious scares. All of the big clubs in action took the competition seriously, playing their first team squads regardless of opposition. Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg SV and Borussia Mönchengladbach all advanced past lesser opposition, though the latter two sides had to struggle.

Fortuna Dusseldorf 3-0 1860 Munich

Fortuna Dusseldorf are in good form in the 2.Bundesliga while 1860 are struggling, and that form was apparent on Tuesday. Though, the gap between the sides wasn’t supposed to be this large. 1860 defender Collin Benjamin had a shocker, putting in an own goal and getting sent off as Fortuna striker Sascha Rösler scored the other two goals.

Heidenheimer 0-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach (Gladbach advances on penalties)

Despite playing their best side, including budding superstar Marco Reus, Gladbach couldn’t manage a goal in 120 minutes of play. However, the shootout was kind to them and they avoided embarrassment with a 4-3 shootout victory.

RB Leipzig 0-1 FC Augsburg

One of the three football properties under the umbrella of drink magnet Red Bull, RB Leipzig are making huge strides in climbing the German football pyramid to get into the Bundesliga. However, the current Bundesliga side were too much for them today, with Daniel Brinkmann scoring his first goal of the season in Augsburg’s win.

SpVgg Unterhaching 1-4 VFL Bochum

It’s been a rough few months for Bochum, who lost a promotion playoff last spring and now sit mid-table in the 2.Bundesliga. However, they put on a show on the road today, scoring four goals and giving away two penalties, one of which was converted, in a wild match.

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Dynamo Dresden

This one was a little more one-sided than the scoreline indicates. Dresden were never in it, and Dortmund had all of the ball. Robert Lewandowski and Mario Götze scored the goals, while Lucas Barrios returned as a substitute. This game featured an unfortunate delay in the middle of the second half, caused by an idiot in the Dynamo supporters' section with a cap gun.

Eintracht Trier 1-2 Hamburg SV

Trier almost pulled off an absolutely massive upset, pushing HSV to extra time, but German international Dennis Aogo saved everyone the agony of penalties with a game-winning free kick goal in the 110th mintue.

SpVgg Greuther Fürth 4-0 SC Paderborn 07

These teams are both doing reasonably well in the 2.Bundesliga, so this score was a bit of a surprise. Fürth are an excellent side, though, and you’re likely to see them playing in the Bundesliga next season.

Hoffenheim 2-1 FC Cologne

In the day’s only matchup between two Bundesliga sides, Hoffenheim completed a comeback victory over Cologne, who are missing some key players due to injury. Mato Jajalo stunned the home side with a 6th minute goal, but they came back to win in regular time with goals from Chinedu Obasi and Knowledge Musona.
