FC Twente Vs. PSV Eindhoven, 2011 Dutch Eredivisie: 10-Man PSV Hangs On For 2-2 Draw

PSV Eindhoven were creating chances and they had themselves a 2-1 lead. It looked like they were on their way to a rare win at De Grolsch Veste, but then the referee got involved. He deemed it necessary to send Kevin Strootman off for reasons only he knows. All of a sudden, PSV were down to 10 men and just trying to hold on. They couldn’t though as Twente netted a late equalizer to keep their undefeated home record alive in a 2-2 draw that keeps both teams even on points in second place.

Douglas Franco opened the scoring with a 10th minute striker, but PSV had an answer within a minute. Zakaria Labyad equalized when a cross found him unmarked in the center and even though he scuffed the shot, it crawled across the line to level things.

That 1-1 scoreline held until the second half when a short corner left the Twente defense scrambling. After playing the ball short, PSV played a cross to the back post, where Marcelo climbed the ladder to head home the go-ahead goal. The high from going ahead only lasted so long though because Strootman was sent off.

Once PSV were down to 10 men, the match got mad. Twente forced two fantastic saves from Andreas Isaksson and hit the post another time. This was before they got an equalizer from Leroy Fer, who timed his first Eredivisie goal with Twente well as he came flying in to clinically knock him a cross to even things at two apiece.

While they were down a man, PSV were not out of it. In fact, late on in the match they had the best chance at a winner, but Dries Mertens’ chance hit the post. The two teams were forced to settle for a point apiece, which will keep them second in league, but could see them fall further behind leaders AZ Alkmaar, who play Heracles on Sunday.
