Claudio Pizarro scored his 150th career Bundesliga goal, and Werder Bremen won 3-1 to move them to fourth in the table.
Mainz 05 Vs. Werder Bremen, 2011 Bundesliga: Claudio Pizarro Is A Legend
Niko Bungert scored in the 23rd minute on a diving header from a Yanus Malli corner kick. Pizarro equalized just five minutes later with some fantastic dribbling work through four defenders, a lucky deflection, and a deft finish over the Mainz goalkeeper.
Goalscorer turned provider after the restart when Pizarro found Aaron Hunt who blasted a shot into the corner from near 25 yards. Bremen wouldn’t put the match away until the 78th minut when Sebastian Prödl finished off his own rebound when he headed Hunt’s corner off of the post.
The win snaps a three game run of some disappointing performances from Bremen. Two losses to Hannover and Dortmund and a 1-1 draw with Augsburg.
I wish I had better news for Mainz supporters, but I just don’t. They are not a good team and are quite awful at times. A complete rethinking of what they’re doing is in order if they want to remain a first division club next season.
