Seattle Sounders Vs. Chicago Fire, 2011 U.S. Open Cup Final: Fredy Montero Breaks Deadlock

It took 78 minutes, but this 2011 U.S. Open Cup final finally has a goal and it comes courtesy of Fredy Montero. The Colombian was able to knock home a rebound and put the Seattle Sounders on top of the Chicago Fire, 1-0, with only 12 minutes left in the match. If the Sounders are able to hold on, they will win their third consecutive U.S. Open Cup, the first time any team has done so in the professional era.

Montero got credit for the goal, but he didn't do the bulk of the work for the goal. It was Jeff Parke who did the work, skying to win a header off of a corner kick. It was a good header that forced Sean Johnson to get low and make a save, but the rebound was right in front. The Fire defenders were caught watching the match, while Montero was alert, jumping on the loose ball and banging it home for what could turn out to be the Cup winning goal.
