Rangers have confirmed that leading scorer Steven Naismith will miss the remainder of the season due to injury. Scans have confirmed that the 25-year-old suffered damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The Scottish striker has bagged nine league goals thus far for the Glasgow club who are nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League.

Naismith was stretchered off during Rangers 2-1 win at Aberdeen this weekend following a clumsy challenge by Rob Milsom. Naismith suffered a similar injury in 2008 and managed to return in eight months.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has backed the league’s leading scorer to comeback from the latest injury in the same way he did last time.

McCoist told the club’s website, “Naisy has recovered from a serious knee injury before and he will come back again. He is a fighter and a popular member of the squad and we will all work hard to win games for him while he is out.”
