Borussia Dortmund are top of the Bundesliga, thanks to their 2-0 Revierderby victory over Schalke 04. Die Königsblauen looked very much like a struggling team dealing with injuries, playing on the road in a derby. There really wasn’t any point in the match where Schalke did not look over their heads, and if it wasn’t for the fantastic goalkeeping of Lars Unnerstall, Schalke would have lost by much more.
Borussia Dortmund Vs. Schalke 04, 2011 Bundesliga: Full Time, Der BVB Win Easily
Dortmund’s first goal came in the 16th minute, with Robert Lewandowski heading in a free kick delivered by Marcel Schmeltzer. Schalke’s defense was nowhere to be found, leaving Lewandowski completely unmarked. A 6’1” striker with eight goals in the Bundesliga coming into this game. Completely unmarked. At that point, the game already felt over.
A second goal seemed inevitable throughout the first half and at the start of the second half, with Der BVB finally finding it in the 61st minute. Following a set piece situation and a very good save by Unnerstall on Lucas Barrios, defender Felipe Santana stepped up and pounced on the rebound, burying a right-footed shot from 15 yards out to seal the victory.
Schalke's young defense was poor, Lewis Holtby had a shocker, and strikers Raul and Klass-Jan Huntelaar were completely erased from the game. They'll want to move on and forget this ever happened. They were completely embarrassed in Germany's biggest derby, and it wasn't terribly surprising.
