For the first time in their history, Queretaro have won a playoff series. Incredibly, they’ve done it against Chivas Guadlalajara, the No. 1 seed in Liguilla and arguably the biggest team in Mexico. Even more improbably, they’ve done it without getting a single shot on target in the second leg of the quarterfinal tie.
Chivas Guadalajara Vs. Queretaro, 2011 Apertura Liguilla: Full Time, Gallos Blancos Snatch Unlikely Victory
Carlos Bueno scored twice in Queretaro’s 2-1 home win in the first leg of the series, and those two goals would be all they needed as they held out for a 0-0 draw away to Estadio Omnilife. Chivas created 23 shots on the night, but Gallos Blancos goalkeeper Liborio made nine saves, at least four of which were downright spectacular.
As they went longer without a goal, Chivas got more and more desperate and impatient and began to rely on long balls and long shots. Unsurprisingly, Queretaro also got more confident the longer they went without allowing a goal, and in the final ten minutes it never really felt like Chivas were going to score. The SuperLider curse lives on, as the top seed has once again been upset in Liguilla.
