Santos Laguna are unsurprisingly through to the semifinals of the Mexican Primera’s 2011 Apertura Liguilla, thanks to a 4-3 aggregate victory over Jaguares Chiapas. Though the score looks close, the tie was never really in doubt for the higher seeded Saints, who would have gone through with a draw. They led 2-0 at one point away in Chiapas before Jaguares scored twice to make it interesting, then scored first again in their 2-1 home win on Sunday night.
Santos Laguna Vs. Jaguares Chiapas, 2011 Apertura Liguilla: Saints Through To Semifinals
Carlos Darwin Quintero scored what was essentially the clinching goal in the 41st minute. Picking up a pass from Osmar Mares, Quintero set himself up for a long shot with a great first touch, then fired a low rocket into the back of the net at the far post, scoring from 25 yards out.
Jackson Martinez brought his team back into the tie with a brilliant headed goal in the 66th minute, but Daniel Ludueña ended it for good in the 73rd, tapping in a brilliant assist from Oribe Peralta. Santos are now expected to play Monarcas Morelia in the semifinals, assuming Pachuca do not pull off a miracle against UANL Tigres.
