Monterrey have clinched a crucial win to keep their Liguilla hopes alive, but must wait on other results before they find out whether or not they will be headed to the playoffs. They did their part with a 3-2 victory over Atlante, perhaps saving Victor Manuel Vucetich’s job in the process, but their playoff chances still look slim.
Monterrey Vs. Atlante, 2011 Apertura: Final Score, Rayados Win But Still Await Liguilla Fate
Their anemic attack finally got going, with Olympique Lyonnais veteran Carlos Delgado scoring a brace while Jesus Zavala added Monterrey’s other goal. Delgado scored in the 26th minute, then again in the 62nd minute to put his team up 2-0, but Monterrey’s defense faltered after that. Zavala scored in between goals by Sonny Guaderrama and Giancarlos Maldonado during a crazy seven minute sequence, but Monterrey’s lead was never in serious doubt.
Morelia’s win on Friday did not help their cause, nor did Queretaro’s win on Saturday. All of Santos Laguna, Puebla and UNAM Pumas are yet to play, and all can end the Rayados’ hopes of qualification.
