Club America is a bad team that fooled us for a little bit while when they inched semi-close to one of the final Liguilla spots, but then they were kind enough to remind us again that they’re still a bad team and they gave us one final reminder on Saturday against Cruz Azul. From the beginning until the end, Cruz Azul just laid a hammer down on Las Aguilas to take a 3-0 lead before America got one back at the end just to save face for a 3-1 scoreline.
Cruz Azul Vs. Club America, 2011 Apertura: Las Aguilas Beaten Badly Again
It wasn’t as if Cruz Azul had to work particularly hard for their goals either. First it was Emanuela Villa, then it was Javier Orozco and then finally Villa a second time as the home side picked up three goals, all from close range. Daniel Montenegro scored a gorgeous free kick to remind people that America still has one sensational player, but this one was all Cruz Azul.
If Chivas can get a point tonight against Pachuca, they will top the league, but if Pachuca wins, Cruz Azul is likely to finish first. Meanwhile, America is second from the bottom and could still end up dropping one more spot. How the mighty have fallen.
