Landon Donovan proved to be a fan favorite and a major impact player when he went on a short-term loan to Everton in 2010 so the American star and Toffees figured why not try it again? Donovan will join the Toffees on a two-month loan from the LA Galaxy beginning on January 4 with Everton's match against Bolton and ending with the February 25 Merseyside derby, allowing him to return in time for the Galaxy's March 6 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Toronto.
Landon Donovan To Join Everton On Two-Month Loan
The American star who became a fan favorite at Goodison Park in 2010 will re-join Everton for two months before returning to the LA Galaxy in time for their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal.
When Donovan went on loan to Everton in 2010, he fit in on the right side of the midfield and added a spark to the club. They went through a great run of form during his spell there, picking up results against Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United.
"I am delighted that we have managed to get Landon back," Everton manager David Moyes told the club's website. "He will give us some good experience over January and February. He did well for us when he was over two years ago and hopefully will return with those same qualities."
While this will undoubtedly please the Everton supporters, this remains just a short-term loan and doesn’t address their numerous problems, which can only be taken care of with investment in the club and that looks unlikely under current ownership. Turning this loan into a permanent move has already been bandied about, but the reality is that the club lacks the resources to meet the Galaxy’s asking price.
At the same time, Donovan is coming off of a season in which he missed matches and was clearly bothered due to injuries. He turns 30 years old in March and has now forfeited his offseason by going away on this loan before another MLS season and the beginning of World Cup qualifying for the United States. Short-term, this is fantastic for Donovan and American fans, but long-term the Galaxy and U.S. supporters could very well rue this move.
