Following his team’s defeat at the hands of second division side Mirandes in the Copa Del Rey, Villarreal has sacked manager Juan Carlos Garrido. The cup exit was merely the straw that broke the camel’s back, as Garrido was rumored to be losing his job over the winter break regardless of the cup result.

Villarreal have fired manager Juan Carlos Garrido after the Yellow Submarine posted terrible results for the entire first half of the season.
Villarreal had a fantastic 2010-11 season under Garrido's watch, but have had a miserable start to this season. They failed to take any points in their UEFA Champions League group and currently sit in 17th place in La Liga, despite being favorites to finish in the top four. Their offensive record has been abysmal, with 13 goals from 17 matches. For comparison, both Real Madrid and Barcelona have scored 50 or more goals this season.
“It has been a very difficult season but it is clear that we failed. I assume my responsibility as head of the group. It is not a surprise that things ended like this, you could see it coming by the way things were going. I accept my dismissal because the coach has the main responsibility. It has been a difficult year from the start and we have paid for it throughout the season, with setbacks like injuries and the rest.”
The sale of Santi Cazorla to Malaga and the injury to Giuseppe Rossi created a situation where any manager would have struggled to produce spectacular results, but even with those setbacks, Villarreal's results in the first half of the season have been simply unacceptable.
