The United States national team will play Italy in a February friendly, according to an article in the New York Times' soccer blog. The story cites Italy manager Cesare Prandelli, who apparently made the comments to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta Dello Sporto, and indicates that the game will almost certainly be played in order to accomodate the spate of European-based players who will likely be participating.
United States Will Play Italy In February Friendly, Says Italy Manager Cesare Prandelli
Italy coach lends credence to earlier reports that the United States would play in Genoa on Feb. 29.

To be entirely fair, this is not entirely new, news. Greg Seltzer indicated that this game would be happening back on Nov. 8 on his No Short Corners blog. Seltzer reported that the game would be in Genoa, Italy and be played on Feb. 29. But that was more than six weeks ago and this is the first thing close to a confirmation that the game will, indeed, be happening.
Italy is gearing up for Euro 2012, which starts in June, while the United States is still working out the kinks for CONCACAF World Cup which starts also starts in June. The United States also has friendlies scheduled against Venezuela (Jan. 21) and Panama (Jan. 25).
