Five days after sacking Robert Di Matteo and two days after Chris Hughton was rumored to have been handed the manager job only to have not, West Bromwich Albion has found its new manager in former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson. Caretaker manager Michael Appleton will stay in charge of the club for this weekend's clash with West Ham and Hodgson will take the reigns beginning next week.
Roy Hodgson Appointed West Bromwich Albion Manager
The news of Hodgson's hiring was confirmed by the club website, which had a statement that read: "West Bromwich Albion are delighted to announce they have appointed Roy Hodgson as the club's new head coach. The 63-year-old former Internazionale, Switzerland, Fulham and Liverpool manager has this morning committed himself to the club until June 2012."
A year ago, Hodgson was the talk of English football and even floated as a possible England manager one day after taking Fulham to the Europa League final. Hodgson parlayed that work into the manager’s job at Liverpool, but he was sacked last month after the club got off to its worst top-flight start in 57 years.
Now, Hodgson will be charged with keeping the Baggies from relegation. The club sits in 17th place and only are out of the drop zone on goal difference. The situation he inherits with West Brom is similar to the one he inherited when taking over Fulham and the Baggies will hope that he can keep the club in the Premier League, as he did with Fulham.
