Club Necaxa Vs. Club America: 1-0, Rayos Take Surprise Lead

Club Necaxa might be headed for relegation down to the Liga de Ascenco, but they certainly haven’t quit fighting. They look set to play the role of spoiler in Group 2, as they have taken a 1-0 lead at home against Club America, who have won their previous three matches in a row after a bad start. Both teams have had plenty of chances and failed to capitalize, until Sergio Blanco’s 35th minute goal.

Blanco’s goal was a good one, and it was pretty bizarre as well. Sitting at the top of the penalty area, in the middle, Blanco had the ball played into his feet. His first touch popped the ball up into the air and his second touch, an attempted shot, deflected off of a defender and then even higher into the air. America’s defenders looked confused and didn’t come anywhere close to clearing the ball, while Blanco remained focused the entire time the ball was bouncing around. He found himself clear through on goal with no one to block his shot with his third touch, and he calmly slotted the ball past Armando Navarrete and into the back of the net.

Necaxa’s best player, besides Blanco, might be their goalkeeper Oscar Perez. He’s been focused throughout the match and his command of his own penalty area has prevented some scoring chances that lesser goalkeepers might have allowed to occur.
