Having been put on their heels by a good stretch of play by City, United began to close down the space and turn the match into one much like the one they and City played in November that resulted in a 0-0 draw. Then, with the match lacking much smoothness or open play, United turned to their tried and true man to put them ahead.
Manchester United Vs. Manchester City: Ryan Giggs Opens The Door For United Goal
A long ball out of the back was knocked down by Wayne Rooney to Ryan Giggs and with a single touch Giggs changed the match. The 37-year-old played a beautiful first touch ball over the City defense to a sprinting Nani, who settled and touched the ball past a helpless Joe Hart for a 1-0 United edge.
The Red Devils will take their one-goal lead into the halftime break and have to feel confident about things. While they have been unable to establish much in the midfield and have been outplayed there, they’ve found a bit of space on the left and the long ball netted them a goal.
For their issues in the midfield, United's back line has been stout and Carlos Tevez may as well have retired or gone back to Argentina or whatever else is next. A fantastic performance from the defense has to give the Red Devils confidence, but the inevitable introduction of Dzeko will just make things more difficult if they cannot improve in the midfield.
