West Brom Vs. West Ham: Baggies Collapse Allows West Ham Three Goal Comeback At Hawthorns

West Ham deserves credit for their comeback at the Hawthorns on Saturday. Just to get in the right mind space to pull back three goals is worthy of admiration. Two second half goals from Demba Ba and Carlton Cole gave the Hammers what could prove to be a valuable point (while avoiding a huge goal difference hit). While the draw keeps the Hammers in 19th place, it also keeps them within reach of 17th place West Brom, only two points away after the 3-3, Saturday draw.

But then there’s West Brom’s side of the story. The Baggies got goals from Graham Dorrans and Jerome Thomas within ten minutes. A Winston Reid own goal half-way through the period had them up three and cruising. The handful of missed opportunities to add to the lead looked destined for insignificance. With new manager Roy Hodgson in the stands, the Baggies were set to start the new era in West Bromwich on a good foot.

And of course, that didn’t happen, a huge blow to the Baggies. If West Brom is going to stay up, West Ham is likely to be a team that’s going to have to suffer at their expense. Yet West Brom not only failed to get three at home against them, they collapsed in the process.

Thankfully, Roy Hodgson will be on the job as of next week. Had he been on the sidelines today, it would have been an ominous start to his tenure. Then again, if he were on the sidelines, today’s capitulation may not have happened.
