Sunderland Vs. Tottenham Hotspur: 2-1 Spurs At The Stadium Of Light

Sunderland have given up more points from winning positions than any other team in the league so far this season. Tottenham Hotspur have gained more points from losing positions than... well, you've guessed it, any other team in the league so far this season. That Sunderland opened up the scoring with Asamoah Gyan's cooly-taken 11th minute goal, then, had less meaning than we might have imagined, and true to form Tottenham came storming right back. Michael Dawson equalised just before the brink of halftime with a header from a corner, and Nico Kranjcar completed the comeback with a superb volley from the edge of the area. Sunderland attempted to come back, but Kieran Richardson could only bounce a long-range attempt of his own off the top of Heurelio Gomes' crossbar in the dying minutes, with the Tottenham defence otherwise dealing with the waves of red and white attacks fairly comfortably.

Spurs have now won two games on the trot thanks to Kranjcar wonder-strikes, and this one has (at least temporarily) moved them ahead of Chelsea into 4th in the league. Sunderland, who were eying up a Champions League spot before the game, couldn't take advantage of Liverpool's slip against Wigan at Anfield - after the matches today it looks very much like there are only five Premier League teams with a reasonable chance to make it into Europe's top competition this season.
