Twenty minutes into the match, and it’s difficult to remember when Shakhtar Donetsk had any meaningful possession in their match at Roma. The Giallorossi have been patient on the ball, preferring to work their attack over to and through Jeremy Menez’s right side. Unfortunately for Shakhtar, Roma’s had little problem getting him the ball, using Simone Perotta and John Arne Riise to find Menez in the space behind Douglas Costa, in front of Darijo Srna.
Roma Vs. Shakhtar Donetsk: Giallorossi Control Yet To Yield A Goal
The move that follows has already happened three or four times. Menez will take possession and cut-in, toward Yarosalv Rakitskiy before failing to do ... something. At times that something has been a shock (blocked). Others it’s an attempted pass. On time Menez seemed to wildly dibble the ball into his opponent.
But the pressure is still yielding chances. In the 22nd minute, Roma created a corner kick, with Francesco Totti delivering a great, in-swinging ball for Nicolas Burdisso near the far post. From three years out, the Argentine defender couldn't redirect the ball for what should have been a goal.
Instead, the match stays scoreless, with Roma look very much like the bigger club from a bigger league, playing on home soil.
