Former AS Roma striker Vincenzo Montella has been confirmed as the caretaker manager of the club, replacing Claudio Ranieri, who resigned yesterday following Roma’s disaster of a match. After losing 3-2 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek Champions League play, Roma took a 3-0 lead over Genoa away. Alas, less than two minutes after Roma had scored their third, Genoa turned it around, scoring four goals in thirty minutes for a 4-3 win. With rumors of his sacking eminent, Ranieri decided to leave on his own terms, with Roma accepting his resignation shortly after it was offered.
Vincenzo Montella Replaces Claudio Ranieri At Roma
While many English tabloids tried to create controversy by insisting Carlo Ancelotti was about to leave struggling Chelsea to take the helm at his former club, Roma always had their eye on Montella. The 36-year-old helped them win their last league title in 2001 and went on to coach Roma's youth side (whereas Francesco Totti, also in that squad, continues to captain the club. Venerable). The decision for Roma to hand the reigns to a young manager with little experience is questionable, but considering they're likely out of the Champions League and not viable contenders for next year, might as well see what Montella can do.
