It appeared as if Bayern Munich and Inter Milan were destined for a scoreless draw, but instead it is the visitors who have grabbed a 90th minute goal and appear to be on their way to a gigantic away win in the first leg of this UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie. A win by Munich would have them sitting pretty, a goal up and an away goal in the bank as they head back to the Allianz Arena for the second leg in three weeks time.
Inter Milan Vs. Bayern Munich: Mario Gomez Puts Munich Ahead At The San Siro
Inter had established their best bit of possession of the match and were forced Munich to defend in their own box, both from open play and on set pieces. Twice Thomas Kraft had to step forward, once with a save on a header and another time to get hand to a great cross, but Munich had held. In the final minutes though, Munich did more than held. The finalists from a year ago got the all-important winner to change the face of the tie.
Arjen Robben had been at the center of everything Bayern had going forward in the second half, setting up teammates and putting the Inter defense on its heels, even rattling the post once. This time he found space over 25 yards from goal and fired a hard, low shot, but one Julio Cesar got behind and should have had no trouble securing. Unfortunately for the hosts, Cesar couldn't hold onto the shot though and it trickled free into the path of Mario Gomez, the striker who did well to follow in on the initial shot and had a simple put away on Cesar's gaffe. Gomez put the shot in the net and Munich are on their way to a huge victory at the San Siro.
Fittingly, the winning goal emphasized the brilliance of Kraft on this day as he held steady all match with some fantastic saves, while Munich gets the winner when Cesar couldn’t hold on. It is only appropriate that Robben also be involved in the goal considering his threat all match and it was his shot that Cesar spilled right onto Gomez’s foot.
