Say this for the Central American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal: They certainly seem to care. Both teams are in the middle of their respective league seasons, but that doesn’t seem to be affecting the quality of play on the pitch.
Saprissa Vs. Olimpia, CONCACAF Champions League: Saprissa Leads 1-0 At Halftime
Saprissa has taken a 1-0 lead on a beautiful goal off the foot of Armando Alonso, the team’s leading scorer so far this season. The goal was volleyed off a deflected corner kick and beat the goalkeeper inside the near post.
The match has been relatively closely contested despite the fact that Saprissa has been a man up since the 10th minute when Boniek Garcia was shown red for an off-the-ball incident. Olimpia came very close to equalizing in the 15th minute, but Victor Bolivar was able to stop the initial shot from Douglas Caetano and a Saprissa defender was able to clear the follow-up shot off the line.
Saprissa has managed about a 60-40 advantage in possession and out shot Olimpia 4-2.
