Although all of the talk in the buildup to England's friendly against Denmark in Copenhagen was about Jack Wilshere's senior debut, it was Ashley Young who stole the show with an excellent second half display after coming on as a substitute for the disappointing Wayne Rooney. Frank Lampard wore the England armband for the first time, but he presided over a distinctly mediocre first half display which saw England go 1-0 behind in the first ten minutes after Daniel Agger stole in between John Terry and Michael Dawson to head a Christian Eriksen delivery past Joe Hart.
Denmark Vs. England: Ashley Young Nets Winner, England Come Back To Win 2-1
Although Darren Bent netted more or less immediately in reply (the was some fine work from Theo Walcott in the build up) and Lampard had a wonderful backheeled finish disallowed for offside, it was Denmark who were the dominant force for the first 45 minutes. 18 year-old Eriksen, who plays for Ajax in the Eredivisie, was particularly impressive throughout, creating a host of chances and hitting Hart's left post after some brilliant buildup play. England, meanwhile, were far from impressive, and while Wilshere did well as a midfield holder his defensive role prevented him from showing his more creative qualities.
The Wilshere-Lampard experimented lasted for just the opening half - Gareth Barry and Scott Parker replaced them after the break, and Ashley Young came on for Rooney. England dominated the rest of the match, mainly thanks to Young's superb work as a second striker, and his deft finish that crept inside Tomas Sorenson's left post ended up winning England the match.
Although Walcott played well in patches, Parker had a good half, and Wilshere's debut was fairly successful, it was Young who did the most for his standing in the England hierarchy today. Rooney and right-back Glen Johnson were less impressive, however, with Rooney doing a very good impression of a bad football player while Johnson showed the tactical awareness and positional discipline of a two day-old starling (although he did record the assist on Young's winner). For England and Fabio Capello, the game meant very little, but it was a nice way to get a good look as some talents who deserve more time in an England shirt than they've yet been given.
