West Bromwich Albion are set to name ex-Newcastle manager Chris Hughton to fill their own vacant managerial role. Hughton, who has been unemployed since December the NUFC board inexplicably relieved him of his duties, is in line for a rapid return to the top flight, although questions remain about the rationale behind West Brom's dismissal of Italian Roberto di Matteo, who secured the team's promotion from the Championship last season and had fought many of the best teams in the Premier League to a standstill, including a heroic 3-2 win against Arsenal at the Emirates and a come-back 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

However, despite Albion's good displays against the giants of the league, they're still a remarkably inconsistent side and are only above the relegation zone on goal differential. With Sunday's sacking of di Matteo, West Brom needed to move quickly in order to secure a replacement, and opted to pick up Hughton, who had by most accounts done a fine job with Newcastle United. Rumour has it that Roy Hodgson was in the picture as well, but turned the Baggies down in order to enjoy Liverpool paying him millions to do nothing managerial, which has the extent of his relationship with the club since August.
Anyway, journalist Ian McGarry is saying that the deal to bring Hughton to the Hawthorns is done and will be announced tomorrow:

Good luck to Hughton indeed. Most neutrals who’ve watched West Brom have quickly developed something of a soft spot for the side, so I can’t imagine many are cheering for them to be relegated. Hughton is as good a choice as any to steer them out of danger. Hopefully di Matteo can find a new position fit for his capabilities as well.
