There’s no question that Cruz Azul will be moving through to the CONCACAF Champions League semfinals as they currently lead Santos Laguna 5-1 on aggregate, but they’ll have to play one leg of the semis without Christian Giménez. The forward picked up his second yellow card of the match on a sloppy tackle in the 64th minute and will now have to sit out the first leg of the semifinal against either Monterrey or Toluca.
Santos Laguna Vs. Cruz Azul, CONCACAF Champions League: Christian Gimenez Gets Second Yellow Card
Giménez has been one of the top players in CCL play, scoring three goals. He has been one of Cruz Azul’s top scorers during the Clausura (two goals in eight matches) and was their top scorer in 2010 (20 goals in 36 matches).
Shortly after Giménez was sent off, Santos pulled a goal back with Cristian Benitez scoring in the 71st minute. Benitez was able to slot home a shot that had caromed off the far post and went directly to him.
