Monterrey took a 2-1 lead over Cruz Azul in their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal on Wednesday behind goals from Sergio Santana and Neri Cardoza. Monterrey ran their unbeaten streak in CCL to nine matches, and have now won eight of those matches.

Monterrey is playing for a chance to play in their first CONCACAF title match in the club's history while Cruz Azul is trying to appear in a record eighth continental championship game. Cruz Azul has won a record five CONCACAF championships. The winner of this semifinal will play the winner of the Real Salt Lake-Saprissa semifinal.
Santana scored his goal in the 57th minute, breaking up what had been a tied match. Cruz Azul had tied the score about eight minutes earlier on an Adrian Cortes free kick.
Los Rayados outplayed Cruz Azul for much of the match, outshooting their opponents 7-3 and holding a 52-48 possession advantage. Monterrey received further good news when Humberto Suazo returned from a shoulder injury, entering the match in teh 67th minute.
