DC United Vs. Columbus Crew: Charlie Davies Converts Penalty, 2-0 DC United

It's been a long road back to fitness for US international forward Charlie Davies, who suffered horrific injuries in a fatal Oct. 2009 car crash after just eight appearances with Ligue Un side Sorcheaux. Almost eighteen months and a missed World Cup later, he's back. DC United managed to swing a loan deal for the striker, acquiring Davies for the MLS season, and he's just repaid them in a big way in his first game for the club, slotting a second half penalty easily past Columbus goalie William Hesmer.

Obviously, this is a huge moment for Davies as US national team fans after the specter of what could have been career-ending injuries have been hanging over his head for so long. It's also, of course, a big goal for DC United, who are now 2-0 up over the Columbus Crew and in a great position to secure an opening day win.
