Schalke 04 have their revenge for the semifinal of a year ago, and they are in the Final of the DFB Pokal for the first time since 2005. It is a fantastic victory for Felix Magath’s side, who will certainly be favourites against their 2. Bundesliga opponents in Berlin, MSV Duisburg.
Bayern Munich Vs. Schalke 04: Holders Out As Königsblauen Book Place In Berlin
For Bayern Munich, a second home defeat within a week to a hated rival will not be easily forgotten. The Bavarians had plenty of chances in the second half, but were foiled by their own profligacy and the brilliance of Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Allianz Arena in the summer.
FCB had a number of set-piece opportunities in the waning minutes, and will feel that they should have gotten a penalty when Atsuto Uchida pushed over Mario Gómez in the box. However, they simply were not precise enough with their finishing, and Schalke defended very well on set-pieces. The visitors could have wrapped the game up a few minutes before the end, as Bayern were stretched by a couple of dangerous counterattacks, but were not able to add a bit of gloss to the tight scoreline. They won’t mind, though, as they are through to the final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on May 21st.
