It’s unclear whether Jose Mourinho intended to annoy current England manager Fabio Capello when he told L’Equipe that he’d been offered Capello’s job and had turned it down, although everyone even remotely familiar with the Portugal manager is more than capable of drawing their own conclusions in that regard. Whatever Mourinho’s intentions, the news, which comes after a week of the British press questioning Capello’s fitness to lead the country into the 2012 European Championships, has clearly irritated the Italian, who threw some pointed remarks the Special One’s way when pressed on the subject:
Fabio Capello Unhappy With Jose Mourinho Following Revelations Regarding England Job
I don’t know. This is a question for the chairman that chose me, not for me. It does not matter. Absolutely not. Every time a club or a national team decides to choose a manager, they decide to speak with a lot of managers. It’s normal. This is not different.
I don’t like to speak about my relationship with other clubs or teams out of respect for other managers. I don’t like to speak about this. I’ve said enough.
The FA is insisting that Capello was their first choice to lead England after the departure of Steve McClaren in 2007 and that Jose Mourinho was only on their shortlist due to public pressure, which is a fine show of support for the current box. Unfortunately, saying something along those lines is essentially an admission that they’re really, really, really stupid. Nobody in their right mind could possibly prefer Capello to Jose Mourinho, who went on to win the Champions League with Inter Milan while Capello’s England crashed and burned at the World Cup.
