It was a big day for Rogerio Ceni as he helped his club, Sao Paulo, defeat their rivals Corinthians, 2-1, for the first time in 11 matches and doing so with his 100th career goal. This isn’t just any milestone goal, though. Ceni is a goalkeeper, making his hitting the century mark simply stunning.
Brazilian Goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni Scores 100th Career Goal
“It was beautiful,” said Ceni, who was capped 17 times by Brazil and was the third keeper on the 2002 World Cup winning side. “As a goalkeeper you don’t enter the match thinking about scoring a goal, but it happened just as I wanted: with a free kick, deciding an important match. For me, it doesn’t matter that it was against Corinthians, but for the fans it must have been important.”
Ceni’s goal came in the 56th minute and put Sao Paulo up 2-0. Three red cards were handed out in the match and Corinthians late goal made Ceni’s strike the winner.
According to FIFA, Ceni only has 98 goals because two of his goals came in unofficial friendlies. Even so, FIFA acknowledges he is the all-time leader in goals for a goalkeeper. With the ability to hit a free kick like that, it’s no surprise that he’s been able to tally up an incredible total.
