In addition to the five star players who were sent home from the England camp to rest, Fabio Capello's squad has two more absences. Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon has a hamstring twinge and has been ruled out of action, while Aston Villa's on-loan right back Kyle Walker will also miss the match with a groin problem. Unlike the players who are simply rested, Capello's allowed to replace members of his squad who drop out due to injury, and the manager has chosen to include Sunderland's 20 year-old striker Danny Welbeck on the team in Lennon's place.
England Vs. Ghana, Preview: Danny Welbeck Called Up For England - Roker Report
Welbeck, who has apparently been choosing between representing England and Ghana thanks to having Ghanaian parents, has yet to make an international appearance at the senior level despite playing for England’s U-21 side regularly. Featuring for England during Tuesday’s friendly could end the matter once and for all, according to Simon Walsh of SB Nation’s Sunderland blog, Roker Report:
There’s every chance Welbeck could see some action. England would be wise to [use him] against Ghana tonight, as giving him even 5 minutes would ensure he’s an England player for the rest of his life.
It’s very much deserved for Danny, as he’s been in fantastic form prior to his injury, and offers things not many other England strikers do. Not specifically a poacher like Bent, nor a target man like Carroll. He can do it all.
Welbeck, who is on loan at Sunderland from Manchester United, has impressed this season in between injuries, scoring six goals in 22 league appearances. The Black Cats have three more players expected to be involved for Tuesday’s match, but they won’t be playing alongside Welbeck - Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, and John Mensah are all believed to be in line to start for Ghana.
