Fabio Capello has rested several star players but he’s still going to get himself in trouble with both Arsenal and Aston Villa for retaining both Jack Wilshere and Ashley Young in his starting lineup. Wilshere being overworked has already been the subject of some consternation from Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, and Young played a full ninety minutes against Wales on Saturday.
England Vs. Ghana, Lineups: Jack Wilshere, Ashley Young Start For England
Joe Hart remains in goal, but it’s a new-look defence in front of him as only Glen Johnson keeps his place from the Wales game. Everton’s Leighton Baines gets the start at left-back, while Phil Jagielka and Bolton’s Gary Cahill pair up at centre half in the absence of both John Terry and Michael Dawson. The midfield features James Milner in his favoured central position alongside 20 year-old Jack Wilshere, with captain for the day Gareth Barry presumably being deployed as a screening player. £35M Liverpool striker Andy Carroll leads the line, flanked by Aston Villa duo Ashley Young and Stewart Downing.
While I can’t imagine any of the players who featured for a full ninety minutes will last particularly long against Ghana, it’s still a little bit rude to give Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United their players back and insist on playing the likes of Young and Wilshere. Why are Aston Villa and Arsenal not getting the same sort of treatment from Fabio Capello as the sides still in the Champions League?
