With two goals in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Olimpia, Saprissa has advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 aggregate goal victory. The Costa Rican giants will now play Real Salt Lake for a chance to reach their record eight CCL title game. Saprissa last appeared in the championship game in 2008 and have won three titles, more than any non-Mexican team.
Olimpia Vs. Saprissa, CONCACAF Champions League: Saprissa Heading To Semifinals
RSL, meanwhile, is playing what many are considering the biggest match in franchise history. A trip to the CCL final would arguably be an even bigger accomplishment than their MLS Cup championship in 2009.
They will face a team that is playing as good as any in the CCL. Saprissa’s victory over Olimpia featured some clinical finishing, especially on Thursday. The first goal, by Armando Alonso, came in the 26th minute and featured Alonso scoring while laying on his back. The second goal, by Roger Rojas in the 53rd minute was a beautiful strike from about 20 yards out.
The finishing allowed Saprissa to overcome what was sometimes a lopsided match. Olimpia had numerous opportunities to score, but only found the back of the net once and only after they trailed 2-0 on aggregate. Olimpia ended up outshooting Saprissa 13-7 and had a 52-48 possession advantage.
