Portland Timbers Vs. Chicago Fire: Early Kenny Cooper Goal Disallowed

Kenny Cooper sent Jeld-Wen Field into a frenzy when he scored what by all rights should have been the first MLS home goal for the Portland Timbers in the 12th minute, but the score was waved off. There didn't appear to be any infractions on the replay, but referee Ricardo Salazar apparently called a foul on the header that came off a corner kick delivery from Jack Jewsbury. The corner kick was set up by another close call on goal when Steve Purdy sent a left-footed shot toward the goal that forced Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson into a diving save.

The early going of the match has been somewhat sloppy otherwise with rain coming down and the field looking pretty much like a lake. That hasn’t dampened the crowd’s enthusiasm, though, as the Timbers Army has led a nonstop series of chants and songs that have made the atmosphere seem like something you’d see in Europe ... or Seattle.
