Timber Joey didn't have to wait too long to crank up the chainsaw. Jorge Perlaza scored a goal in the 29th minute and Rodney Wallace followed that up about 10 minutes later to give the Portland Timbers a 2-0 lead over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday. The goals mark the first time this season that the Timbers have led during any of their MLS matches.
Portland Timbers Vs. Chicago Fire: Jorge Perlaza, Rodney Wallace Give Timbers 2-0 Lead
Perlaza was able to get behind the Fire defense on a nice long ball, split two defenders and then easily beat Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson for his first goal of the season. Wallace's goal came in the 38th minute off a free kick from Jack Jewsbury that deflected out to the defender, who volleyed it from about 20 yards out. His shot hit off a Fire defender and beat Johnson to the far post.
The goals made up for an earlier one that had been waved off. We later learned that referee Ricardo Salazar had deemed the corner kick delivery on the disallowed goal to have gone out of bounds before Kenny Cooper got his head on it.
