Hamburg striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after tearing his left calf muscle in Saturday’s match against Hannover 96.
Ruud van Nistelrooy Injury: Out For The Season
Van Nistelrooy was fairly nonexistent against Hannover over the weekend, but this is a massive blow to Hamburg. Their hopes for catching Mainz 05 for the final Europa League position looks in serious doubt now.
The Dutchman had seven goals so far this season which makes him their second leading goalscorer. They’ll now be looking for more production out of José Paolo Guerrero who has been used as a substitute this season with van Nistelrooy and Croatian Mladen Petric getting the starter minutes.
Van Nistelrooy’s contract with Hamburg is up at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see what he does this summer. Van Nistelrooy turns 35 in July. He has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer in the past, so we’ll see if there’s any interest there or if he can catch on with another European club.
