You'd expect Tottenham Hotspur fans to be happy to see one of their own recognised by players on other teams as the best in the country - which is exactly what happened today, when Gareth Bale was named as 2011's PFA Player of the Year. But something isn't quite right about that - he's spent much of the season on the sidelines and he's actually been at his best when playing in Europe rather than in the Premier League.
Gareth Bale Winning PFA Player Of The Year Makes No Sense - Cartilage Free Captain
That's something Kevin McCauley of SB Nation's Tottenham Blog Cartilage Free Captain is only too happy to point out. Kevin claims that not only is Gareth Bale clearly not the best player in the league, but he's not even the best player on his own team, with that honour going to either Rafael van der Vaart or Luka Modric. Who does Kevin think should have won?
I can come up with at least ten guys who I think deserve this award more off the top of my head. Second was Samir Nasri and third was Carlos Tevez. How can anyone think either of those players has not had a season as good as Bale? HOW?!? I seriously don't understand. How about Dimitar Berbatov and his 21 league goals? How about the dominant Nemanja Vidic? The criminally under-appreciated Michael Essien? Nigel De Jong? Vincent Kompany? AM I INSANE?
The moral of the story here, more than anything else, is that we probably shouldn’t take awards voting particularly seriously, especially not when they’re being voted on by a group of individuals not exactly renowned for their towering intellect. So everyone offended by their player not making the list (not to mention those pissed off that their own player won) should probably just chill out.
