Real Zaragoza To Be Renamed ‘Team Dubai’?

According to a statement from Royal Emirates Group, the Dubai investment group owned by Sheikh Butti Bin Suhail Al Maktoum, the company has bought a Spanish La Liga side in the top division and is set to rename them 'Team Dubai'. The team in question is believed to be Real Zaragoza, who are currently having major financial difficulties and are in desperate need of help, but nobody really thought they were that desperate. [Update: It's not Zaragoza, say Royal Emirates Group].

As bizarre as the story is, it’s not entirely clear whether the Royal Emirates Group will actually be allowed to go through with the name change. At any rate, I think they should be disqualified from owning the team in the first place based on their terrible choice of a moniker. ‘Team Dubai’ is both ridiculous and boring at the same time, and that’s frankly unacceptable. Here are some of my suggestions:

  • We’re From Zaragoza And We Like Penguins
  • You Only Beat Us Because We’re Rubbish
  • Go Planet!
  • Team America, World Police
  • Team Edward
  • Zaragoza Oilers (h/t @twisted_blood)
  • Team Jacob
  • New York Red Bulls

It’ll be really disappointing if the purported new ownership group gets the chance to rename a whole team and doesn’t have more fun with it than ‘Team Dubai’. Hopefully this is true and we get to see the We’re From Zaragoza And We Like Penguins in action next year.

Update: It’s not going to be Zaragoza, and apparently ‘Team Dubai’ is to be an honorific of some sort, according to a statement from the Royal Emirates Group:

It is a Spanish La Liga division side. The team will not be renamed but it will be titled as ‘[club’s name] Team Dubai’ in order to deliver the message that Dubai care.

I think that might be even worse.
